Stripe’s headline price is short: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card payment in the US. What it leaves out is everything that stacks on top. A card issued abroad adds 1.5%, charging in another currency adds 1%, a card you type in yourself adds 0.5%, and Billing, Invoicing, Tax and Radar each add their own fee to the same payment. All of it is charged on the whole amount, shipping and sales tax included. The calculator above applies each fee to the amount Stripe names, shows the arithmetic on every line and rounds each fee to the cent, half up, as Stripe’s pricing policy says.

Four things catch most merchants out:

  • Surcharges stack. A card issued outside the US, paying in its own currency, costs 2.9% + 1.5% + 1%: $5.70 on a $100 payment instead of $3.20.
  • The fee applies to tax and shipping too. Stripe takes its percentage of the whole charge. On a $108 payment that includes $8 sales tax, $0.23 of the $3.43 fee is the 2.9% on the tax.
  • Refunds don’t return the fee. Refund a $100 card payment and the $3.20 stays with Stripe.
  • Disputes cost twice. $15 when a dispute opens and another $15 if you respond with evidence, which comes back only if you win outright.

$1,000.00$29.302.93%$970.70

The 30¢ fixed fee is what hurts small payments: a $5 payment gives up 9.0% to Stripe and a $100 payment 3.2%, while a $1,000 payment pays $29.30, close to the 2.9% headline.

How the fees add up on one payment

A $120 order from a customer whose card was issued outside the US, charged in their own currency:

Worked example
  • Payer pays$120.00
  • Stripe processing fee4.4% × $120.00 + $0.30−$5.58
  • Currency conversion fee1% × $120.00−$1.20
  • You keep$113.22

The processing fee is 4.4% of $120 (2.9% plus the 1.5% international surcharge), which is $5.28, plus 30¢: $5.58. Because the customer paid in another currency, Stripe converts the payment at the mid-market rate and charges 1% of it, $1.20, as its own line. Together that is $6.78, or 5.65% of the order, and $113.22 reaches your balance. Charged in US dollars, the same order would cost $5.58, and with a US-issued card $3.78.

Cards, bank debits and buy now, pay later

The way your customer pays changes the fee more than anything else. On a $500 payment from a US customer:

  • Card or wallet online: $14.80.
  • Card you type into the Dashboard (phone or mail orders): $17.30, because keyed cards cost 3.4% + 30¢.
  • Link instant bank payment: $13.30 (2.6% + 30¢).
  • ACH Direct Debit: $4.00. It is 0.8% and never more than $5.00, so from $625 up every ACH payment costs exactly $5.00. A failed debit costs $4.00.
  • Klarna: $30.25. Affirm (standard package) or Afterpay: $30.30.

Buy now, pay later costs about twice as much as a card: that is the price of being paid in full while the customer pays in installments. Comparing processors for the same payment? Our PayPal fee calculator and Square fee calculator use the same layout.

Subscriptions, invoices, Stripe Tax and Radar

Stripe’s other products charge on top of the payment fee, on the same amount:

  • Billing takes 0.7% of subscription payments, renewals included. A $50 monthly plan paid by card costs $1.75 in processing plus $0.35 for Billing, $2.10 a month.
  • Invoicing takes 0.4% of each paid one-off invoice on Starter, 0.5% on Plus. A $1,000 invoice paid by card costs $29.30 plus $4.00.
  • Stripe Tax (no-code, in Checkout, Payment Links, Billing or Invoicing) takes 0.5% of the whole transaction, including the tax it calculates, only where you’re registered. Through the Tax API it is $0.50 per transaction instead.
  • Radar Lite is free for card payments. Radar Standard costs $0.05 per screened payment, Plus $0.07 and Pro $0.09. If your account used Radar before July 29, 2026, you are on a free Radar Standard trial that ends on January 22, 2027. After that every screened payment, subscription renewals included, is billed unless you switch to Radar Lite. On a $10 subscription with Billing, those 5¢ take the fees from $0.66 to $0.71.

Stripe fees outside the US

Stripe prices by the country of your account. A payment of 100 in the local currency with a domestic personal card:

  • UK and German accounts pay 1.5% + 20p (or + €0.25 in Germany, and Ireland’s page lists the same) for personal cards but 2.8% for business, corporate and commercial Visa and Mastercard cards; American Express counts as personal. During summer 2026 Stripe’s pages moved business cards from 1.9% to 2.8% and international cards from 3.25% to 3.15%, without announcing when existing accounts switch.
  • Canada charges 2.9% + C$0.30 like the US, but an international card adds 0.8% rather than 1.5%.
  • Australia cut domestic cards to 1.65% + A$0.30 on October 1, 2026, and international cards drop from 3.5% to 2.8% on April 1, 2027. Australian fees include GST.
  • Currency conversion costs 2% in every country here except the US, where it is 1%.

Ways to keep more of each payment

  • Send a Payment Link or invoice instead of typing in a card. Keyed cards cost 3.4% + 30¢; a Payment Link costs 2.9% + 30¢ and a hosted invoice 3.3% + 30¢.
  • Offer ACH Direct Debit for large payments. With the $5.00 cap, a $1,000 invoice costs $24.30 less than by card.
  • Price in your payout currency when you can. The conversion fee only applies when the customer pays in another currency.
  • Stay on Radar Lite if it covers you. Switching is one click in the Dashboard and avoids a fee on every payment from January 22, 2027.
  • Use standard payouts. They are free; instantly paying out the $96.80 from a $100 payment costs $1.45.
  • Pass fees on with the right formula. To receive $100 on a US card, charge $103.30, not $103.20: adding 2.9% + 30¢ on top leaves you $99.91. Check card network and local rules on surcharges first.

Questions people ask

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

In the US, Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ per successful online payment with a US-issued card, and the same for Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link and Cash App Pay. On a $100 payment that is $3.20, so you keep $96.80. Failed card payments cost nothing, and the 30¢ is charged once per payment however many items it covers.

What is Stripe’s international card fee, and does it stack with currency conversion?

A card issued outside the US adds 1.5%, and if the customer pays in a currency other than your payout currency Stripe adds another 1%. They stack: a $100 payment with a foreign card in a foreign currency costs $4.70 in processing plus $1.00 for conversion, $5.70 in all. UK, Canadian, Australian and German accounts pay 2% for conversion.

Does Stripe charge its fee on sales tax and shipping?

Yes. Stripe charges its percentage on the whole amount you charge, because it doesn’t know which part is tax or shipping. A $108 payment that includes $8 sales tax costs $3.43, and $0.23 of that is the 2.9% on the tax. Stripe Tax’s 0.5% no-code fee is also charged on the total including tax: $0.54 here.

Does Stripe give back its fee when I refund a payment?

No. Stripe keeps the processing fee (and any currency conversion fee) from the original payment, so refunding a $100 card payment still costs you $3.20. On standard pricing a card refund carries no extra fee; refunds of bank transfers can.

How much is a Stripe chargeback (dispute) fee?

In the US, $15 when a dispute opens, which is never returned, plus another $15 if you respond with your own evidence, returned only if you win. On a $40 payment, an unanswered dispute costs $55 (the payment plus $15), a won one $15, and a lost one $70. UK accounts pay £20 + £20, Canada C$15 + C$15, Australia A$25 + A$25 and euro accounts €20 + €20.

What is Stripe’s ACH fee and its cap?

ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% of the payment, never more than $5.00, so every payment of $625 or more costs exactly $5.00. On a $1,000 invoice that is $5.00 by ACH against $29.30 by card. A failed ACH debit costs $4.00.

How much does a Stripe Instant Payout cost?

Standard payouts to your bank are free. Instant Payouts cost 1.5% of the amount paid out in the US, at least $0.50 per payout: instantly paying out the $96.80 left from a $100 card payment costs $1.45. The UK charges 1% (minimum 40p), Canada 1% (minimum C$0.60), Australia 1.5% (minimum A$0.50) and Germany 1% (minimum €0.50).

Is Stripe Billing’s 0.7% charged on top of the card fee?

Yes. Billing’s pay-as-you-go price is 0.7% of subscription payments, renewals included, added to the payment fee. A $50 monthly subscription paid by card costs $1.75 in processing plus $0.35 for Billing, $2.10 a month. One-off invoices are priced under Invoicing instead, at 0.4% (Starter) or 0.5% (Plus) per paid invoice.

Will Stripe Radar start costing money in 2027?

For accounts that used Radar before July 29, 2026, yes: their free Radar Standard trial ends on January 22, 2027, and from then each screened payment costs $0.05 in the US (£0.04 in the UK, C$0.07 in Canada, A$0.08 in Australia, €0.05 in Germany), renewals and all payment methods included. Switching to Radar Lite in the Dashboard keeps fraud screening for card payments free.

How much should I charge to receive $100 after Stripe fees?

On a US card, $103.30: add the 30¢ fixed fee to what you want and divide by 0.971, then round to the cent ($100.30 ÷ 0.971 = $103.2955). Adding 2.9% + 30¢ on top ($103.20) leaves you $99.91, because Stripe also takes 2.9% of the extra $3.20. To receive $1,000 you would charge $1,030.17, a cent under the formula’s answer because Stripe rounds its fee to the cent; the “What to charge” tab works this out for any method and add-on.
