Does this match your statement?

Gumroad advertises 10% + $0.50 per sale, but that is only its own fee. Direct sales also pay 2.9% + $0.30 for payment processing, sales that come through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace pay a flat 30% instead, and affiliates, installment plans and the way you get paid out each change what reaches your account. The calculator above applies every fee to the amount Gumroad charges it on, rounds the way Gumroad’s own code does, and shows the sales tax Gumroad adds for the buyer separately, because it never touches your fees or payout.

Four things catch most creators out:

  • Processing comes on top of the 10%. The pricing page shows 10% + $0.50; the help center adds 2.9% + $0.30 for processing on direct sales. A $25 sale costs $4.03 in fees, not $3.00.
  • Discover replaces the fees, it doesn’t add to them. A Discover sale pays 30% and nothing else: $7.50 on a $25 product.
  • The fixed $0.80 hits cheap products hard. A $1.15 product leaves you $0.20.
  • Payouts start at $100. Since March 23, 2026 your balance has to reach $100 before Gumroad pays you, up from $10.

What you keep at common prices

Each row is a direct sale through Gumroad’s checkout, paid out to a bank account.

$100.00$13.7013.7%$86.30
$250.00$33.0513.2%$216.95

The fixed $0.80 is why the rate falls as the price rises: a $5 product gives up 29.0% of the sale, a $250 one 13.2%.

How the fees add up on one order

A $50 product sold directly to a buyer whose country charges 20% VAT:

Worked example
  • Buyer pays in total$60.00
  • of which sales tax / VAT (Gumroad collects it) (paid by the buyer)20% × $50.00$10.00
  • Sale amount$50.00
  • Gumroad fee10% × $50.00 + $0.50−$5.50
  • Processing fee2.9% × $50.00 + $0.30−$1.75
  • Bank payoutNo fee$0.00
  • You keep$42.75

The buyer pays $60.00: your $50 price plus $10.00 of VAT that Gumroad adds at checkout and pays to the tax office. Gumroad’s fee is 10% of $50 plus $0.50, or $5.50, and processing is 2.9% of $50 plus $0.30, or $1.75. Neither is charged on the VAT, so you keep $42.75 whether the buyer pays tax or not. Gumroad adds up the two percentages and rounds once, so each line can be a cent off what you’d get working it out separately; the total is exact.

Discover sales: when Gumroad takes 30%

Gumroad Discover is Gumroad’s own marketplace: its category pages, search and recommendations. When a buyer finds you there, Gumroad charges a flat 30% that already includes processing, with no fixed fee.

The same sales when the buyer came through Discover

$50.00$15.0030.0%$35.00
$100.00$30.0030.0%$70.00

At most prices Discover costs far more: $15.00 on a $50 sale against $7.25 for a direct one. Below $4.65 it is the other way round, because 30% of a small price is less than the fixed $0.80; from $4.72 up, Discover always costs more.

Products are listed on Discover by default once your account qualifies, which takes a $100 balance from genuine sales and a risk review. To keep a product off, delete its category on the product’s Share tab. Products on Discover are also opted into Gumroad Affiliates automatically, so a sale can carry a 10% commission as well; you can opt out for all products in your Affiliates dashboard.

Affiliates, collaborators and high-volume sellers

Gumroad splits its fees with anyone who takes a cut of the sale. An affiliate on 30% of a $100 sale earns $30.00 minus 30% of the $13.70 in fees, or $25.89, and you keep $60.41. Commission is paid on the product price only, never on tax or shipping. Collaborators work the same way with a cut of up to 50%, but shipping stays entirely with you.

Installment plans cost a little more, because every payment is charged the full fees, fixed $0.80 included. A $100 product paid in three installments of $33.34, $33.33 and $33.33 costs $15.30 in fees instead of $13.70.

Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, Gumroad says new direct sales that month pay 5% + $0.50 instead of 10% + $0.50, until the 1st of the next month. On a $100 sale that cuts the fees from $13.70 to $8.70. Discover sales stay at 30%, and a refund that takes you back under $20,000 switches it off again. Turn on “over $20,000” under “More options” and check your sales CSV to confirm the rate on your account.

Payouts, refunds and tax

  • Payouts. Bank payouts are free once your balance reaches $100 (more in a few countries), converted at the exchange rate on the day of each sale. Where Gumroad can’t pay into a bank it pays through PayPal, in US dollars, for 2%. US creators can take an instant payout for 3%, up to $10K at a time; Gumroad sends your balance divided by 1.03. On a $25 sale those take $0.42 and $0.62.
  • Refunds. Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded amount and keeps only the processing part. With your own connected PayPal or Stripe account, you pay both Gumroad’s and the processor’s fees on a refund.
  • Connected accounts. If buyers pay into your own PayPal or Stripe account, Gumroad takes only its 10% + $0.50 (or 30%) and PayPal or Stripe charge their own processing fee; see the PayPal fee calculator and the Stripe fee calculator.
  • Tax. Gumroad has been the merchant of record for every sale since January 1, 2025. It adds sales tax, VAT or GST on top of your price, so you can’t sell tax-inclusive. Physical products shipped into the EU are the exception: the buyer pays VAT to customs on arrival instead.

Ways to keep more of each sale

  • Send buyers to your own link. A $25 product keeps $20.97 as a direct sale and $17.50 through Discover. Links in your newsletter, posts and website all count as direct.
  • Bundle cheap products. One $10 bundle keeps $7.91; two separate $5 sales keep $7.10, because each pays the fixed $0.80.
  • Offer installments only where they help. Each extra payment costs another $0.80 in fixed fees.
  • Wait for the free payout. Bank payouts cost nothing; instant payouts take 3%.
  • Decide on Gumroad Affiliates. Opting out stops the 10% commission on future sales, at the cost of the extra reach affiliates bring.

Questions people ask

How much does Gumroad take from a sale?

On a direct sale (your profile, a direct link or your own marketing) Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 and adds 2.9% + $0.30 for payment processing, so 12.9% + $0.80 in all. On a $25 product that is $4.03 and you keep $20.97. If the buyer found you through Gumroad Discover, the fee is a flat 30% instead: $7.50, and you keep $17.50.

Does Gumroad’s 10% + 50¢ include credit card fees?

No. Gumroad’s help center lists card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 as not included in the 10% + $0.50. Through Gumroad’s own checkout that processing fee is the same whether the buyer pays by card, PayPal or a local payment method. On a $50 sale it adds $1.75 to the $5.50 Gumroad fee.

Does the 30% Discover fee include processing?

Yes. A Discover sale pays a flat 30% that already includes payment processing, with no $0.50 or $0.30 on top. It replaces the direct-sale fees rather than adding to them. A $50 Discover sale costs $15.00, against $7.25 for the same sale through your own link.

How do I know whether a sale came from Discover?

Gumroad charges the 30% when the buyer found your product through its marketplace: Discover pages, search on gumroad.com and its recommendations. Sales through your profile, direct links, email or social posts are direct sales. Export a CSV of your sales to see the exact fee on every sale. To keep a product off Discover, delete its category on the product’s Share tab.

Does Gumroad have lower fees for big sellers?

Gumroad’s help center says that once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month pay 5% + $0.50 instead of 10% + $0.50, with processing still added. It resets on the 1st. On a $100 sale that cuts the fees from $13.70 to $8.70. Discover sales stay at 30%.

Does Gumroad refund its fees when I refund a customer?

Partly. When you refund a sale made through Gumroad’s checkout, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded amount and keeps only the payment-processing part, $1.75 on a $50 sale. Sales paid into your own connected PayPal or Stripe account work differently: you pay both Gumroad’s and the processor’s fees on the refund.

Does Gumroad collect sales tax and VAT for me?

Yes. Since January 1, 2025 Gumroad has been the merchant of record for all sales: it adds the buyer’s sales tax, VAT or GST on top of your price and pays it to the tax office. You can’t make prices tax-inclusive, and Gumroad’s fees aren’t charged on the tax. A $50 sale with 20% VAT costs the buyer $60.00 and still leaves you $42.75.

Are there Gumroad payout fees?

Standard bank payouts are free, but your balance has to reach $100 first (it was $10 until March 23, 2026). Creators in countries without bank payouts are paid through PayPal for a 2% fee. US creators can take an instant payout for 3%, up to $10K at a time.

Who pays the fees on affiliate and collaborator sales?

Gumroad splits them in proportion to the cut. On a $100 sale with a 30% affiliate, the fees are $13.70, the affiliate gets $30.00 minus 30% of the fees, or $25.89, and you keep $60.41. Gumroad Affiliates always earn 10%, and products on Discover are opted into that program automatically.

Do installment plans cost more on Gumroad?

Yes, a little. Every installment is charged Gumroad’s full fees, including the fixed $0.50 + $0.30. A $100 product paid in three installments costs $15.30 in fees instead of $13.70 paid at once.
