Amazon’s main selling fee looks simple: a percentage of each sale, 15% in most categories. The details are where sellers get caught. The percentage is taken from the item price plus the shipping and gift wrap the buyer pays, it depends on a fee category that can differ from where your product appears in the store, and in eleven categories it changes with the price in two different ways. On top come a selling plan, a $1.80 closing fee on media, and a deduction when you refund. The calculator above applies each rule the way Amazon’s fee schedule words it and shows the arithmetic on every line.

Every Amazon fee at a glance

These are the fees for selling on amazon.com when you ship orders yourself. If Amazon stores and ships your products, use the Amazon FBA calculator, which adds fulfillment and storage fees to the same referral fee.

Four things catch most sellers out:

  • The referral fee is charged on shipping. On orders you ship yourself, the shipping you charge and any gift wrap are part of the total sales price. $5 of shipping in a 15% category costs $0.75. Sales tax is never included.
  • Your fee category is not always the store category. Amazon assigns every product one fee category. Check it in Manage Inventory or the Fee Preview report before you price.
  • There are two kinds of tiers. Clothing, Baby, Beauty, Grocery and Lawn Mowers apply one rate to the whole price, set by the bracket the price falls in. Jewelry, Watches, Furniture, Electronics Accessories, Compact Appliances and Fine Art charge each rate only on the slice of the price in its band.
  • Most categories have a $0.30 minimum per unit. A $1.50 item at 15% would owe about $0.23, so it pays $0.30 instead: 20% of the price.

What you keep at common prices

Each row assumes Home & Kitchen (15%), $5 shipping charged and the Professional plan spread over 100 sales a month.

Item priceTotal feesFee rateYou keep

$100.00$16.1515.4%$88.85
$200.00$31.1515.2%$173.85

The referral fee takes the same 15% of every dollar, so the only thing that moves the rate is the $0.40 plan share: a $10 item with $5 shipping gives up 17.7% of the order, a $200 item 15.2%.

How the fees add up on one order

A $25 item in Home & Kitchen with $5 shipping, sold on the Professional plan:

Worked example
  • Buyer pays$30.00
  • Referral fee15% × $30.00−$4.50
  • Professional plan (share of $39.99/month)$39.99 ÷ 100 sales a month−$0.40
  • You keep$25.10

The buyer pays $30.00 before tax. The referral fee is 15% of all of it, $4.50, of which $0.75 comes from the shipping. The $39.99 Professional fee works out to $0.40 an order at 100 sales a month. You keep $25.10, and the postage you buy comes out of that.

Clothing, jewelry and other tiered categories

Clothing and Accessories is where the bracket rule bites hardest. A total sales price of $15.00 or less pays 5%, up to $20.00 pays 10%, and anything above $20.00 pays 17%, all on the whole amount. Because shipping counts, an $18 shirt with $3 shipping is a $21.00 sale and pays $3.57; shipped free, the same shirt pays $1.80. At $20.00 the fee is $2.00 and at $20.01 it is $3.40, so one extra cent leaves you $1.39 worse off.

Baby Products and Beauty, Health & Personal Care switch from 8% to 15% above $10.00. Grocery switches from 8% to 15% above $15.00 and has no minimum fee. Lawn Mowers & Snow Throwers go the other way, from 15% to 8% above $500.00. The calculator adds a note when your total sits within $3 of a clothing, baby, beauty or grocery edge.

The other tiered categories work like tax brackets. Jewelry pays 20% on the first $250 and 5% on the rest, so a $300 piece pays $52.50. Watches pay 16% up to $1,500 and 3% above it; Amazon’s own example puts a $7,000 watch at $405.00. Furniture is 15% up to $200 and 10% above ($39.90 on a $299 chair), Electronics Accessories 15% up to $100 then 8%, and Compact Appliances 15% up to $300 then 8%.

Professional or Individual plan

The Individual plan has no monthly fee but costs $0.99 for every unit sold. The Professional plan is $39.99 a month, charged only in months with active listings, and has no per-item fee. Amazon puts the break-even at 40 sales a month (40 × $0.99 = $39.60). On the $25 example above, the Individual plan costs $5.49 in fees against $4.90 on Professional at 100 sales a month. Set “Units you sell per month” to your own volume to see your share.

Approved Amazon Handmade sellers pay 15% with a $0.30 minimum in every Handmade category, and Amazon waives the Professional fee for them.

Refunds, media and sellers outside the US

  • Refunds. Amazon returns the referral fee when you refund an item, minus a refund administration fee of 20% of that fee, never more than $5.00 per item. On the $30 order above, it keeps $0.90 of the $4.50. The Individual plan’s $0.99 is not returned. Full refunds of books, music, video and DVDs carry no administration fee.
  • Media closing fee. Books, DVDs, music, software, video games, consoles and gaming accessories add $1.80 per unit. An Individual seller selling a $12 book with $3.99 shipping pays $5.19 in fees, about a third of the $15.99 order.
  • Digital services fee. Sellers established in the UK pay 2% on top of Amazon’s fees, and sellers in France, Italy or Spain 3%, even on US sales. A $100 toy’s $15.00 referral fee becomes $15.30 for a UK seller.
  • Ads. Sponsored Products are billed per click, separately from selling fees. Add your average ad cost per sale under “More options” to see it in the result.

Ways to keep more of each sale

  • Price clothing on the right side of $15.00 and $20.00, counting shipping. Shipping free at $19.99 pays 10%; $18 plus $3 shipping pays 17%.
  • Check your fee category. If Amazon charges you a different category from the one in its fee category guidelines, its Referral Fee Tool checks whether the order qualifies for a reimbursement.
  • Switch plans at 40 sales a month. Below that the Individual plan is cheaper; above it Professional is.
  • Sell cheap items in multipacks. The $0.30 minimum is charged per unit: three $1.50 items pay $0.90 in referral fees, one $4.50 three-pack pays $0.68.
  • Use Amazon’s own discount programs. New branded products sent to FBA can pay 10% on their first 100 units and 5% on the next 100 under the New Selection Program, and business orders over $1,000 for one product can qualify for lower rates when you offer business pricing.

Questions sellers ask

What percentage does Amazon take from each sale in 2026?

In most categories the referral fee is 15% of the total sales price, with a $0.30 minimum per unit. Flat rates run from 8% (Computers, Consumer Electronics, Full-Size Appliances, Video Game Consoles) to 45% (Amazon Device Accessories), and clothing priced $15.00 or less pays 5%. On a $25 item with $5 shipping in Home & Kitchen, the referral fee is $4.50, and with the $39.99 Professional plan spread over 100 sales a month you pay $4.90 and keep $25.10.

Does Amazon charge a referral fee on shipping?

Yes. When you ship the order yourself, the referral fee is charged on the total the buyer pays: item price plus the shipping you charge plus any gift wrap. $5 of shipping in a 15% category adds $0.75 to the fee, so building shipping into the price or charging it separately costs the same.

Is the Amazon referral fee calculated on the price including sales tax?

No. Amazon calculates the referral fee on the total sales price excluding any taxes it calculates and collects through its tax calculation services. Sales tax passes through Amazon to the state and doesn’t raise your fees.

What is the minimum referral fee on Amazon?

$0.30 per unit in most categories: you pay the percentage or $0.30, whichever is more. Media, Video Games, Video Game Consoles, Gift Cards, Grocery and Fine Art have no minimum. The minimum matters below $2: a $1.50 item in a 15% category pays $0.30, which is 20%.

How do Amazon clothing referral fees work under $15 and $20?

Clothing and Accessories pays 5% when the total sales price is $15.00 or less, 10% from $15.01 to $20.00, and 17% above $20.00, and the rate applies to the whole amount, shipping included. At $20.00 the fee is $2.00; at $20.01 it is $3.40. An $18 shirt with $3 shipping is a $21.00 sale and pays $3.57.

How is the Amazon jewelry, watch or furniture referral fee calculated above the threshold?

These categories charge each rate only on the part of the price in its band. Jewelry is 20% of the first $250 and 5% of the rest, so a $300 piece pays $52.50. Watches are 16% up to $1,500 and 3% above: a $7,000 watch pays $405.00. Furniture is 15% up to $200 and 10% above, so a $299 chair pays $39.90.

Is the Amazon Professional seller plan worth $39.99 a month?

Amazon’s own break-even is 40 sales a month: 40 × $0.99 Individual per-item fees comes to $39.60. Above 40 sales, Professional costs less, and only Professional sellers get bulk listing and pricing tools, Amazon Ads, Automate Pricing and selling to business buyers. Below 40 sales, the Individual plan is usually cheaper.

Do I get my Amazon referral fee back when a customer returns an item?

Mostly. When you refund an item, Amazon returns the referral fee minus a refund administration fee: the lesser of $5.00 or 20% of that referral fee. On a $30 order with a $4.50 referral fee, Amazon keeps $0.90. The Individual plan’s $0.99 is not refunded, and full refunds of books, music, video and DVDs carry no administration fee.

What is the $1.80 closing fee on Amazon?

A fixed $1.80 per unit on books, DVDs, music, software, video games, game consoles and gaming accessories, on top of the referral fee and on either plan. An Individual seller selling a $12 book with $3.99 shipping pays $5.19 in fees: $2.40 referral, $1.80 closing and $0.99 per item.

Did Amazon change referral fees in 2026, and what changes in 2027?

Referral fee rates didn’t change in 2025 or 2026. On October 31, 2026 Amazon moves 3D printers and 3D printing pens out of the 12% Business, Industrial & Scientific category into a new 3D Printers category whose rate it hasn’t published yet. As of October 23, 2026 Amazon had not announced any 2027 fee changes.
