Venmo is free for most of what people use it for, which is exactly why its fees surprise them. Paying a friend costs nothing, but the same payment tagged as a purchase costs the person receiving it 2.99%. A business profile pays a different rate, Tap to Pay another, and moving the money to your bank right away takes a second cut. Venmo's own pages don't all agree, either. The calculator above follows Venmo's fee schedule, shows each fee on its own line with the arithmetic, and adds the transfer to your bank so you see what actually lands in your account.

Four things catch people out:
- Whoever receives a purchase pays the fee. If you request $100 and the buyer tags the payment as goods and services, $97.01 arrives. The tag can't be removed afterwards; if it wasn't a sale, the sender has to ask Venmo support to refund the fee.
- Refunds don't bring the fee back. Venmo keeps its fee when you refund a buyer, so a full refund of that $100 costs you $2.99 of your own money.
- Instant Transfer comes out of the transfer. Moving $500 instantly lands $491.25 in your bank, because the 1.75% is deducted from the amount you move.
- Some Venmo pages show old or different rates. A help-center example still says a $100 purchase leaves $98, which was the old 1.9% + $0.10 rate. Business marketing pages quote 2.9% + 9¢ for Tap to Pay, while the fee schedule says 2.29% + $0.09. We use the fee schedule, which is the one Venmo's User Agreement points to.
What you keep at common prices
Each row is a goods and services payment to a personal profile, moved to your bank with the free standard transfer.
| Payment amount | Total fees | Fee rate | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $0.30 | 3.00% | $9.70 |
| $20.00 | $0.60 | 3.00% | $19.40 |
| $25.00 | $0.75 | 3.00% | $24.25 |
| $50.00 | $1.50 | 3.00% | $48.50 |
| $75.00 | $2.24 | 2.99% | $72.76 |
| $100.00 | $2.99 | 2.99% | $97.01 |
| $200.00 | $5.98 | 2.99% | $194.02 |
| $500.00 | $14.95 | 2.99% | $485.05 |
| $1,000.00 | $29.90 | 2.99% | $970.10 |
The fee rate stays between 2.99% and 3.00% on every row. There is no fixed fee, so a $10 sale and a $1,000 sale lose the same share, give or take a cent of rounding, and you keep $97.01 of every $100.
How the fees add up on one order
A $100 goods and services payment, moved to your bank right away with an Instant Transfer:
- Sender pays$100.00
- Seller transaction fee (goods & services)2.99% × $100.00−$2.99
- Instant Transfer fee1.75% × $97.01−$1.70
- You keep$95.31
The buyer sends $100.00. Venmo takes the 2.99% seller fee first, so $97.01 reaches your balance. The Instant Transfer is then 1.75% of the $97.01 you move, which is $1.70, and $95.31 lands in your bank. Together that is 4.7% of the sale. Wait 1–3 business days for a standard transfer and you keep $97.01. To end up with exactly $100 in your balance, request $103.08; to have $100 arrive in your bank by Instant Transfer, request $104.92.
The Venmo Instant Transfer fee
Instant Transfer is 1.75% of the amount you move, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum per transfer. It usually arrives within 30 minutes. This table moves money already in your Venmo balance:
| Amount moved | Total fees | Fee rate | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.25 | 5.00% | $4.75 |
| $10.00 | $0.25 | 2.50% | $9.75 |
| $25.00 | $0.44 | 1.76% | $24.56 |
| $50.00 | $0.88 | 1.76% | $49.12 |
| $100.00 | $1.75 | 1.75% | $98.25 |
| $500.00 | $8.75 | 1.75% | $491.25 |
| $1,000.00 | $17.50 | 1.75% | $982.50 |
| $2,000.00 | $25.00 | 1.25% | $1,975.00 |
| $5,000.00 | $25.00 | 0.50% | $4,975.00 |
The minimum makes small transfers expensive: $0.25 on a $10 transfer is 2.5%, and it applies to anything under $14. At the other end the fee stops at $25, which is 1.75% of about $1,429, so moving $2,000 costs $25 and $5,000 costs the same $25. A personal profile can move up to $5,000 per transfer once your identity is verified, so a bigger balance takes several Instant Transfers, each with its own fee: moving $10,000 instantly costs $50. The smallest Instant Transfer is $0.26.
Personal goods and services or a business profile?
If you sell on Venmo regularly, a business profile is usually cheaper. Payments from the Venmo app or your QR code cost 1.9% + $0.10 of the payment total, tips and tax included, and only on payments of $1.00 or more:
| Payment amount | Total fees | Fee rate | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.20 | 4.00% | $4.80 |
| $10.00 | $0.29 | 2.90% | $9.71 |
| $25.00 | $0.58 | 2.32% | $24.42 |
| $50.00 | $1.05 | 2.10% | $48.95 |
| $100.00 | $2.00 | 2.00% | $98.00 |
| $250.00 | $4.85 | 1.94% | $245.15 |
| $500.00 | $9.60 | 1.92% | $490.40 |
On $100 that is $2.00 instead of $2.99, and the business profile is the cheaper of the two on every payment from $10 up. Only on very small payments does the flat 10 cents tip the balance the other way: $0.20 against $0.15 on $5. Customers paying a business profile with a credit card don't pay Venmo's 3% card fee, and a business profile costs nothing to set up.
Tap to Pay lets a business profile take contactless cards and phones in person. The fee schedule and both Tap to Pay FAQs put it at 2.29% + $0.09, so $2.38 on $100. Venmo's business pages say 2.9% + 9¢, which would be $2.99, and one help article says 2.29% + $0.10. We use the fee schedule and show the other figure in the result, so check your first Tap to Pay statement.
Credit cards, payments abroad and the debit card
Most other Venmo fees fall on the person paying:
- Credit card: 3% of a payment to a personal profile, paid by the sender on top. $100 costs them $3.00. Their card issuer may add a cash-advance fee. Debit cards, bank accounts and your Venmo balance are free.
- Paying a PayPal account outside the U.S.: 5% of the amount, at least $0.99 and at most $4.99, so $2.50 on $50. A credit card adds 3%. If your friend receives another currency, the exchange rate includes a spread of up to 4%.
- Venmo Debit Card abroad: from November 4, 2026, 2.5% of purchases and ATM use outside the U.S., even in U.S. dollars. Venmo also charges $2.50 per withdrawal at a non-U.S. ATM, the same as at a U.S. ATM outside the MoneyPass network.
- Cash a Check: 2% for payroll and government checks or 5% for others, at least $6 per check, if you want the money in minutes. Waiting 10 days is free.
Ways to keep more of each sale
- Use the standard transfer when you can wait. It is free, while an Instant Transfer of $97.01 costs $1.70.
- Move money in fewer, larger batches if you need it fast. The $25 cap means big transfers cost less than 1.75%, while the $0.25 minimum makes transfers under $14 cost more.
- Open a business profile if you sell often. 1.9% + $0.10 beats 2.99% on every payment from $10 up, and your customers can pay by credit card without Venmo's 3%.
- Build the fee into your price. Venmo charges the seller fee to you, not the buyer, so request $103.08 when you need $100. The “What to charge” tab works out any amount.
- Ask friends to pay from a bank, debit card or balance. That avoids the 3% credit card fee for them.
