eBay's fee looks simple: one final value fee when the item sells. The catch is what it is charged on. eBay takes its percentage of the total sale, including the shipping the buyer pays and the sales tax eBay collects for the state, then adds a per-order fee. The rate depends on the category, some categories change rate at a price threshold, and a store, an ad campaign or a low seller rating changes it again. The calculator above applies each fee to exactly the amount eBay names and shows the arithmetic on every line.

Four things catch most sellers out:
- The fee is charged on shipping and sales tax. A $25 item with $5 shipping and 7% tax is a $32.10 sale to eBay. 13.6% of that is $4.37, plus $0.40, so $4.77 in fees, or about 19% of the item price.
- The per-order fee steps up above $10. Orders of $10.00 or less pay $0.30 and anything above pays $0.40, once per checkout however many items the buyer takes.
- Some thresholds are cliffs. In most categories only the part of a sale above $7,500 gets the lower 2.35% rate. Jewelry, women's handbags, bullion and athletic shoes work differently: the whole sale moves to the other rate. Without a store, a $5,000.00 ring costs $750.40 in fees and a $5,000.01 ring costs $450.40.
- Ads use the same total. Promoted Listings fees are a percentage of the whole sale, shipping and tax included.
What you keep at common prices
Each row is a US seller without a store, in most categories, charging $5 shipping to a buyer who pays 7% sales tax, with no ads.
| Item price | Total fees | Fee rate | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $2.58 | 17.2% | $12.42 |
| $20.00 | $4.04 | 16.2% | $20.96 |
| $30.00 | $5.49 | 15.7% | $29.51 |
| $50.00 | $8.40 | 15.3% | $46.60 |
| $75.00 | $12.04 | 15.0% | $67.96 |
| $100.00 | $15.68 | 14.9% | $89.32 |
| $200.00 | $30.23 | 14.7% | $174.77 |
| $500.00 | $73.89 | 14.6% | $431.11 |
The fee rate falls only slowly as the price rises, from 17.2% of the item and shipping on a $10 item to 14.6% at $500, because the 13.6% also applies to the tax and the $0.40 weighs most on cheap items.
How the fees add up on one order
A $50 item with $8 shipping, sold to a buyer who pays 8% sales tax, from a listing promoted at a 5% ad rate:
- Buyer pays$62.64
- Final value fee13.6% × $62.64−$8.52
- Per-order feeOrder total $62.64−$0.40
- Promoted Listings ad fee (5%)5% × $62.64−$3.13
- You keep$45.95
The buyer pays $62.64, and every percentage fee is worked out on that figure. The final value fee is 13.6% of $62.64, or $8.52, plus the $0.40 per-order fee. The ad fee is 5% of the same total, or $3.13. eBay passes the $4.64 of sales tax to the state, so of the $58 you charged you keep $45.95, before paying for the label.
Is an eBay Store worth it?
A Starter store pays the same final value fees as no store. From Basic up, most categories drop from 13.6% to 12.7%, and the lower 2.35% rate starts at $2,500 instead of $7,500. Electronics gain the most: cell phones, cameras and most computer and video game gear fall to 9.35%, and laptops, desktops, tablets and consoles to 7.35%.
A Basic store costs $21.95 a month on yearly renewal, or $27.95 month to month. Saving 0.9 points, it pays for itself once your sales, shipping and tax included, pass about $2,440 a month. For phones the saving is 4.25 points and the break-even about $517 a month. Add your monthly order count under “More options” to see the subscription shared across each sale.
Selling in the UK, Canada, Australia and Germany
The same $25 item in each market, with the calculator's default postage and category, as a business seller in the UK and Germany and on Pro Starter in Australia:
| Market | Sale | Fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 United States | $30.00 | $4.77 15.9% | $25.23 |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | £28.50 | £4.67 16.4% | £23.83 |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | CA$35.00 | CA$5.78 16.5% | CA$29.22 |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | A$35.00 | A$4.99 14.3% | A$30.01 |
| 🇩🇪 Germany | 30,00 € | 4,05 € 13.5% | 25,95 € |
- United Kingdom. Private sellers based in the UK have paid no final value fee since October 1, 2024. Instead the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee of £0.10 plus 7% of the item price up to £20, 4% to £300 and 2% to £4,000. Business sellers pay 6.9% to 14.9% by category, £0.30 or £0.40 per order (£0.40 above £10 since February 12, 2026) and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, all plus 20% VAT.
- Canada. The same structure as the US: 13.6% up to $7,500, or 12.7% up to $2,500 with a store, on a total that includes HST or GST. Jewelry, watches and handbags have no special rates. The international fee is 0.4% for US buyers and 1% elsewhere.
- Australia. Since May 12, 2026, sellers with AU$25,000 or less in sales over 12 months sell free and their buyers pay a Buyer Protection fee. Above that, Pro Starter charges 13.4% up to $4,000, 2.5% above and $0.30 per order. Paid Pro plans charge 6.82% to 13.09% by category tier plus $0.33. All of these include GST.
- Germany. Private sellers sell free within Germany and pay 5% only when they arrange shipping abroad themselves. Business sellers pay 5% to 16% by category and item condition, plus €0.35 or €0.45 per order, before VAT.
Ads, international buyers and seller-level surcharges
- Promoted Listings. You set a general campaign's ad rate anywhere from 2% to 100%. Since January 13, 2026, on ebay.com and ebay.ca, you pay it if the item sells within 30 days of any buyer's click on the ad, at the rate in effect when it sells.
- International fee. US sellers pay 1.65% of the total sale when the buyer's delivery or registered address is outside the US. Orders sent through eBay International Shipping are exempt.
- Below Standard and ‘not as described’ surcharges. These add 6% and 5% of the total sale (7% and 6% after four months in a row), not 6% of the fee. On the $62.64 order above, Below Standard would cost $3.76 more.
- Currency conversion. When eBay converts your money, for example after a sale on another country's site, it keeps 3.25% for US sellers. The UK rate rises from 2.5% to 2.75% on December 1, 2026, Australia's from 3% to 3.25% on November 1 and Germany's from 3% to 3.25% on December 2.
Ways to keep more of each sale
- Combine orders. Several items bought at one checkout with the same shipping method pay one per-order fee.
- Check the category before you list. Guitars and basses pay 6.7% and books, movies and music 15.3%. If you list an item in two categories, eBay charges the higher of the two fees.
- Qualify for Top Rated Plus. Top Rated sellers get 10% off the percentage part of the final value fee on listings with same- or one-day handling and 30-day free returns.
- Stay Above Standard and ship overseas orders through eBay International Shipping: a Below Standard rating costs 6% of every sale, and eBay International Shipping avoids the 1.65% international fee.
- Set ad rates on purpose. Any buyer's click in the last 30 days now counts, so price in your ad rate on promoted listings.
- Reclaim VAT if you can. UK business sellers registered for VAT can usually reclaim the 20% VAT on eBay's fees. Switch off “Count VAT on eBay’s fees” to see the net cost.
