Where to Sell Jewelry: Online Fees vs Local Offers
Etsy, eBay, Poshmark, Mercari or a local buyer? We priced the same jewelry sales online and explain when a jeweler’s cash offer beats the marketplace.

How we tested
We ran three jewelry sales through our fee engines on October 24, 2026: an $80 handmade necklace, a $300 vintage ring and a $2,000 fine piece, with $5, $8 and $25 tracked shipping. Where you charge shipping and buy the label (Etsy, eBay), we subtract the postage; on Poshmark and Mercari the buyer pays the label. Each figure is what you keep after postage, before what you paid for the piece.

Best Place to Sell Jewelry by Price
| $300 piece | Fees | Fee rate | You keep after postage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy | $29.71 | 9.65% | $270.29 |
| Mercari | $30.80 | 10.3% | $269.20 |
| eBay (Jewelry) | $46.60 | 15.1% | $253.40 |
| Poshmark | $60.00 | 20.0% | $240.00 |
| $2,000 piece | Fees | Fee rate | You keep after postage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Etsy | $192.83 | 9.52% | $1,807.17 |
| Mercari | $202.50 | 10.1% | $1,797.50 |
| eBay (Jewelry) | $304.15 | 15.0% | $1,695.85 |
| Poshmark | $400.00 | 20.0% | $1,600.00 |
The order holds at every price. On $80 you keep about $71.50 on Etsy, Mercari or Facebook, $66.85 on eBay and $64.00 on Poshmark. On $2,000 the spread is $207: Etsy $1,807, Mercari $1,798, eBay $1,696, Poshmark $1,600. Poshmark’s flat 20% (Poshmark Fee Policy) and eBay’s 15% jewelry rate (eBay selling fees) are the reasons.

| eBay (Jewelry) | 15% without a store, 13% with one | Drops to 9% / 7% for the whole sale above $5,000 / $2,000; $0.40 per order |
| Poshmark | 20% on sales of $15+ | Buyer pays the label |

The eBay $5,000 cliff
eBay’s jewelry rate doesn’t just fall for the part above $5,000: the lower rate applies to the whole sale. That creates a cliff worth knowing about. A piece that sells for $4,999 pays about $750 in eBay fees and leaves $4,249; at $5,001 it pays about $450 and leaves $4,551. Two dollars more on the price puts $302 more in your pocket.
So if a piece is worth around $5,000, price it at or above the threshold rather than just under it, and be careful accepting an offer that drops it below $5,000. With an eBay store, the same cliff sits at $2,000. Our eBay fee calculator shows the jump if you type prices on either side.
Best Place to Sell Jewelry by Type: Fine, Vintage, Handmade
- Handmade: Etsy. Its buyers come looking for makers, and fees are about 9.5% plus small fixed fees (Etsy Fees & Payments Policy).
- Vintage (20+ years old): Etsy or eBay. Etsy only allows vintage that’s at least 20 years old, alongside handmade items and supplies; eBay suits collectors searching by maker and era.
- Branded fashion jewelry: Poshmark or Mercari. Poshmark buyers shop by brand; Mercari keeps more of the price.
- Fine jewelry and watches: eBay for reach; at high prices its jewelry rate falls to 9% of the whole sale above $5,000 (7% with a store above $2,000). For watches specifically, see the Chrono24 fee calculator.
- Scrap gold, single earrings, broken chains: a local buyer, who pays on weight and purity.

Selling locally: when a cash offer wins
A jeweler, pawn shop or gold buyer pays instantly, with no fees, photos or shipping risk. In exchange you accept less than retail value, because the buyer needs a margin and often pays on the metal and stones rather than the design. That trade is worth it when:
- The value is mostly the metal. A plain gold chain is worth its weight; online buyers won’t pay much more for it.
- The piece needs repair or has a single missing stone.
- Speed matters more than the last 10–20%.
Get two or three offers, ask how each was calculated (weight, purity, the metal price used), and walk away from anyone who won’t explain.
A useful check before you go: weigh the piece on a kitchen scale in grams and note the purity stamp. With today’s metal price you can estimate the melt value yourself, so you’ll know whether an offer is a fair share of it or a lowball. Remember that stones are often valued at little or nothing in a scrap offer, which is another reason to sell gem-set pieces as jewelry rather than as metal.
How to prepare a piece before you list
- Identify it. Look for stamps such as 14K, 18K, 925 (sterling silver) or PT950 (platinum), and a maker’s mark.
- Test or appraise valuable pieces. A local jeweler can test metal and stones; an appraisal supports a higher online price.
- Photograph it properly. Daylight, a plain background, close-ups of stamps and clasps, and one photo for scale on a hand or neck.
- Describe flaws honestly. Scratches, worn plating or a loose stone; returns on jewelry are expensive.
- Ship insured and tracked, with signature confirmation for higher values.

Safety for high-value sales
Jewelry attracts scams. Keep payments inside the platform, ship only to the address on the order, and never accept “friends and family” payments from a buyer you don’t know. For in-person sales, meet in a bank lobby or a shop with cameras, and count the money before you hand anything over.
Our playbook
- Sort pieces into handmade/vintage, branded, fine and scrap.
- Sell scrap locally; list the rest on the platform that fits its type.
- Price from what you want to keep: switch the Etsy or eBay calculator to What to charge and enter your target.
- Relist slow pieces on a second platform after a month instead of cutting the price straight away.
- Keep records of what each piece sold for and where; after a few sales you’ll know which platform suits your kind of jewelry.

Questions people ask
What’s the best way to sell a piece of jewelry?
Match the piece to the buyer. Handmade and vintage pieces sell best on Etsy; branded and fine jewelry on eBay or Poshmark; gold you don’t want as jewelry to a reputable local buyer, who pays on metal value. For anything valuable, get it appraised or tested first.
Where can I sell jewelry for the most money?
Online, in our tests, Etsy and Mercari left the most per sale: about $270 of a $300 piece after fees and postage, versus $253 on eBay and $240 on Poshmark. Selling locally for cash has no fees but offers are usually below retail value.
How do I know if old jewelry is worth anything?
Look for hallmarks or stamps (such as 14K, 18K, 925 or PT950), check for a maker’s mark, and have stones tested. A local jeweler can confirm metal and stones, and recent sold listings for similar pieces show what buyers actually pay.
Is it better to sell gold jewelry online or locally?
If the value is mostly the gold, local: a buyer pays on weight and purity, and there’s no shipping or fee. If the design, brand or age makes it worth more than its metal, list it online where collectors can find it.
Does eBay charge more for jewelry?
Yes. Jewelry pays a 15% final value fee without a store (13% with one), falling to 9% (7% with a store) for the whole sale when it’s above $5,000 ($2,000 with a store).
