Shopify’s fees are hard to pin down because most of them aren’t one percentage. You pay a flat monthly plan, a card rate that changes with your plan and with the card your customer uses, and, if a provider other than Shopify Payments takes the payment, a second transaction fee on top of that provider’s own charge. The card fee is taken from everything the customer pays, shipping and sales tax included. The calculator above puts all of it on one order, including your plan split across a month’s orders, so you can see what each sale really costs.

Four things catch most merchants out:
- Business cards and American Express cost more. Shopify counts every US business, corporate or commercial card and every US-issued American Express card as “premium”: 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic instead of 2.9% + 30¢. Cards issued abroad add another 1%.
- Card fees are charged on shipping and sales tax. On a $50 product with $5 shipping and 8% tax, Shopify Payments takes 2.9% of $59.40, not of $50.
- Another provider means two fees. Shopify adds 2% on Basic to whatever Stripe, PayPal or your bank charges. It arrives on your Shopify bill, not in your payout, so it’s easy to miss.
- Refunds don’t return fees. Refund an order and you still pay its card fee, any currency conversion fee and any transaction fee.
What you keep at common prices
Each row assumes a US store on Basic billed monthly with 100 orders a month, Shopify Payments, a personal US card and $5 shipping charged.
| Product price | Total fees | Fee rate | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $10.00 | $1.13 | 7.53% | $13.87 |
| $20.00 | $1.42 | 5.68% | $23.58 |
| $30.00 | $1.71 | 4.89% | $33.29 |
| $50.00 | $2.29 | 4.16% | $52.71 |
| $75.00 | $3.01 | 3.76% | $76.99 |
| $100.00 | $3.74 | 3.56% | $101.26 |
| $150.00 | $5.19 | 3.35% | $149.81 |
| $250.00 | $8.09 | 3.17% | $246.91 |
| $500.00 | $15.34 | 3.04% | $489.66 |
The 30¢ fixed fee and the 39¢ share of the plan weigh most on small orders: a $10 product with $5 shipping gives up 7.5% of the order, a $500 one 3.0%.
How the fees add up on one order
A $50 product with $5 shipping, sold to a customer who pays 8% sales tax:
- Buyer pays$59.40
- Basic plan, per order$39/month (billed monthly) ÷ 100 orders−$0.39
- Shopify Payments processing2.9% × $59.40 + $0.30−$2.02
- You keep$52.59
The customer pays $59.40. Shopify Payments takes 2.9% of that full amount plus 30¢, which is $2.02, so the $4.40 of tax you pass on to the state still costs you 12 cents in card fees. The 39¢ line is your $39 Basic plan divided by 100 orders: it isn’t deducted from the payout, but it’s part of what each sale costs. You keep $52.59 of the $55 that is yours.
What changes the payment fee
On Basic, the same $55 order costs $1.90 with a personal US card, $2.23 with a business card or American Express, and $2.45 with a card issued abroad. If that foreign customer also pays in their own currency, Shopify adds a 1.5% currency conversion fee on the whole order ($0.83 here). Since April 6, 2026 it is worked out on the gross order rather than on what’s left after fees, so it is slightly higher than before. With automatic exchange rates Shopify builds it into the converted price the customer sees, but it still shows on your statement. PayPal through Shopify Payments starts at 3.49% + 49¢ on every plan, with 3% for currency conversion. You only see which card a customer used after the order comes in, so if many of your buyers are businesses, price with the premium rate.
If Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net or another gateway processes your cards, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It’s calculated on products after discounts plus tax plus shipping, billed every 30 days and not returned on refunds. On the default $55 order that is $1.10 on top of the provider’s fee, so a provider charging 2.9% + 30¢ costs $3.00 in total against $1.90 on Shopify Payments. Check your provider’s side with our Stripe or PayPal calculators.
- PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is your main provider.
- POS orders and manual payments such as cash on delivery or bank transfers aren’t charged.
- Running both costs extra. If another provider stays your main card processor and you turn on Shopify Payments for Shop Pay or local payment methods, those Shopify Payments transactions cost the standard rate plus 1.25%.
- Gift cards and store credit. Stores opened on or after May 12, 2025 pay the transaction fee on the part of an order paid that way, even on Shopify Payments.
Which plan costs less
Yearly billing, charged upfront, lowers the monthly price by about a quarter: Basic is $39 a month or $29 billed yearly, Grow $105 or $79, Advanced $399 or $299. That saves $120 a year on Basic and $312 on Grow.
A bigger plan pays for itself when its lower card rate saves more than its higher price. On Shopify Payments, Grow’s rate is 0.2 points below Basic’s, so it comes out ahead above $33,000 a month in sales on monthly billing ($25,000 billed yearly). Advanced beats Grow above $147,000 a month ($110,000 yearly). With another provider the gap in transaction fees is a full point, so Grow beats Basic from $6,600 a month ($5,000 yearly). The 30¢ fixed fee is the same on every plan, so it doesn’t change these figures.
Fees outside the United States
Plans and third-party transaction fees work the same way in the UK, Canada and Australia, but card rates are set locally. Shopify quotes American Express and international cards there as full rates rather than as a surcharge.
| Market | Sale | Fees | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 United States | $55.00 | $2.29 4.16% | $52.71 |
| 🇬🇧 United Kingdom | £55.00 | £1.60 2.91% | £53.40 |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | CA$55.00 | CA$2.33 4.24% | CA$52.67 |
| 🇦🇺 Australia | A$55.00 | A$1.92 3.49% | A$53.08 |
- UK: 2% + 25p online on Basic; American Express and foreign cards 3.1% + 25p; in person 1.7%.
- Canada: 2.8% + 30¢ online on Basic; American Express and foreign cards 3.5% + 30¢; Interac in person 15¢ flat.
- Australia: 1.7% + 30¢ online on Basic, lowered from 1.75% in September or October 2026; American Express 2.9% + 30¢; foreign cards 3.5% + 30¢; plus 10% GST on the processing fee.
- Currency conversion is 2% outside the US, according to Shopify’s help center.
Ways to keep more of each sale
- Use Shopify Payments unless your own provider is much cheaper: it removes the 2% transaction fee on Basic.
- Pay yearly once you know you’ll stay: Basic drops from $39 to $29 a month.
- Upgrade only past the break-even sales figures above, not before.
- Bundle items. One order pays one 30¢ fixed fee, so two items in one order keep more than two separate sales.
- Answer chargebacks. The $15 fee comes back if you win.
- Watch your apps. Monthly app subscriptions are spread over your orders like the plan; add them under “More options” to see their cost per sale.
