How card processing fees are calculated

Every card sale costs a percentage of the sale plus a fixed fee, and some plans add a monthly fee. Add the three up over a month, divide by your card sales, and you have your effective rate, the only number worth comparing between processors.

The presets use each processor’s published rate:

  • Square: 2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online (Square).
  • Stripe: 2.9% + 30¢ online (Stripe).
  • PayPal Checkout: 3.49% + 49¢.
  • Clover Starter: 2.6% + 10¢ in person (Clover).
  • QuickBooks: 2.99% on invoices, 2.5% in person (QuickBooks).

Credit Card Fee Calculator: Price a Sale So Fees Are Covered

If you want card fees to be your customer’s problem, you have two legal routes in most states: build the fee into your prices, or add a surcharge on credit cards (within card-network rules). To build it in, divide your target by (1 − rate) and add the fixed fee divided the same way. Our credit card surcharge calculator does the exact maths and checks Visa’s 3% cap.

What moves your effective rate

  • Ticket size. Fixed fees dominate small sales. If your average sale is under $15, compare fixed fees before percentages.
  • Card present vs online. In-person rates are lower almost everywhere; typed-in cards cost the most (3.5% at Clover and QuickBooks).
  • Monthly software. A plan fee spread over a slow month can add half a point. Enter it under Options to see the true rate.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate credit card processing fees?

Multiply each sale by the percentage rate, add the fixed fee per transaction, then add any monthly fees. A $40 sale at 2.6% + 15¢ costs $1.19; 300 of them cost $357 a month.

How do I calculate my effective rate?

Divide everything you paid in processing fees (including fixed and monthly fees) by your total card sales. $357 on $12,000 of sales is a 2.98% effective rate.

What is the average credit card processing fee?

For flat-rate processors, roughly 2.5%–3.5% per sale plus a fixed fee of 0–49¢; in person is cheaper than online or typed-in cards. Our guide to credit card processing fees compares six processors on the same sales.

Why do small sales cost more to process?

Because of the fixed fee. 30¢ on a $5 coffee is 6% on its own, before the percentage.
