Does this match your statement?

Etsy charges up to seven different fees on one order, and they don’t all apply to the same amount. Some are taken from the item price only, some from the price plus shipping, and one from everything the buyer pays, sales tax included. The calculator above applies each fee to exactly the base Etsy names in its policy, shows the arithmetic on every line, and rounds each line separately the way your Payment account lists them.

Three of them catch most sellers out:

  • The transaction fee is charged on shipping too. 6.5% of what the buyer pays for postage and gift wrap appears on your statement as a separate “transaction fee: shipping” line.
  • Processing is charged on sales tax. Etsy collects US sales tax for the state, but the 3% processing fee is calculated on the full amount the buyer pays, tax included. On a $30 order with 8% tax that is about 7 cents more.
  • The $0.20 listing fee repeats. You pay it when you list, every four months when the listing renews, and again when an item sells with stock left or when a buyer orders more than one.

What you keep at common prices

Cheap items lose a bigger share: the $0.25 processing fee and the $0.20 listing fee are the same on a $10 item as on a $200 one, so a $10 item with $5 shipping gives up 12.5% of the order while a $200 item gives up under 10%.

How the fees add up on one order

A $25 item with $5 shipping, sold to a buyer who pays 8% sales tax:

Worked example
  • Buyer pays$32.40
  • Listing fee$0.20 × 1 item−$0.20
  • Transaction fee6.5% × $25.00−$1.63
  • Transaction fee: shipping6.5% × $5.00−$0.33
  • Payment processing3% × $32.40 + $0.25−$1.22
  • You keep$26.62

The buyer pays $32.40. The two transaction fee lines come to $1.96, processing is 3% of $32.40 plus $0.25, and the listing fee is $0.20. Sales tax passes through Etsy to the state, so it never reaches you, but it still raised the processing fee.

Offsite Ads: the fee that changes the math

If a buyer reaches your shop through an Etsy ad on Google, Instagram or another site and buys within 30 days, Etsy adds 15% of the order (item, shipping and gift wrap). Once your shop has sold US$10,000 in any 12-month period the rate drops to 12%, but you can no longer opt out. Either way the fee is capped at US$100 per order.

You don’t choose which orders come from these ads, so a sensible check is to price for the worst case: turn on “Yes · 15%” above and make sure the sale still makes money. If it doesn’t, either raise the price or, below the US$10,000 threshold, opt out in your shop settings.

Fees outside the United States

The 6.5% transaction fee and the US$0.20 listing fee are the same everywhere. What changes is processing, a regulatory operating fee in some countries, and tax on Etsy’s own fees.

  • Processing depends on the country of your bank account: 4% + £0.20 in the UK, 4% + €0.30 in the euro countries, and 3% domestic / 4% international in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
  • The regulatory operating fee went up on June 22, 2026 in the UK (0.32% → 0.48%), France, Italy and Spain, and was cut in Canada to 0.50%. Many calculators online still use the old rates.
  • VAT or GST on fees is added for sellers who haven’t given Etsy a VAT number: 20% in the UK, 19% in Germany, 10% GST in Australia. The table above includes it, because most small shops pay it.
  • Currency conversion: if your listings are priced in a different currency from your payment account, Etsy takes another 2.5%. Listing in your account’s currency avoids it.

Ways to keep more of each sale

  • Price for the whole order, not the item. Because shipping is charged the same 6.5%, raising the item price and offering free shipping costs exactly the same in fees. Choose whichever converts better.
  • Sell bundles. One order pays one $0.25 processing fee, so two items in one order keep more than two separate sales.
  • Use Share & Save. Sales that come through your own share link get 4% of the order back, and 6.5% until January 4, 2027 during the holiday promotion, which cancels the transaction fee.
  • Add your VAT number if you have one, so Etsy stops adding VAT to its fees.
  • Watch the Offsite Ads threshold. Below US$10,000 a year you can opt out; above it, build the 12% into your prices.

Questions sellers ask

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

On a typical US order with no ads, Etsy keeps about 10% to 12.5% of the order total: 6.5% of the item price and shipping, 3% of everything the buyer pays plus $0.25, and $0.20 for the listing. On a $25 item with $5 shipping the fees are $3.31 and you keep $26.69 ($3.38 and $26.62 if the buyer also pays 8% sales tax). An Offsite Ads sale adds 12% or 15% more.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to what the buyer pays for shipping and gift wrap as well as the item, and payment processing applies to the whole order. Moving cost from the price into shipping, or offering free shipping, doesn’t change the fees.

Does Etsy charge fees on sales tax?

For US sellers the 6.5% transaction fee is not charged on sales tax, but the 3% payment processing fee is, because it is charged on everything the buyer pays. Outside the US your listing price already includes your VAT, so both fees are charged on the VAT-inclusive price.

What is Etsy’s payment processing fee in the UK, Canada and Australia?

UK: 4% + £0.20 per order. Canada: 3% + C$0.25 for domestic and US orders, 4% + C$0.25 for other international orders. Australia: 3% + A$0.25 domestic, 4% + A$0.25 international. Euro countries: 4% + €0.30. The rate depends on the country of your bank account.

What is the Etsy regulatory operating fee?

A fee Etsy charges sellers based in some countries to cover local regulatory costs. Since June 22, 2026 it is 0.48% in the UK, 0.50% in Canada, 1.14% in France, 0.80% in Italy, 0.88% in Spain, 1.97% in Hungary, 1.67% in Türkiye, 1.24% in Vietnam and 0.05% in India, charged on the item price, shipping and gift wrap.

How do Etsy Offsite Ads fees work, and is there a cap?

When a buyer clicks an Etsy ad on another site and buys within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order, or 12% if your shop has made US$10,000 in any 12-month period. The fee never exceeds US$100 per order. Shops under US$10,000 can opt out; above it, participation is mandatory.

Why was I charged $0.20 again after an item sold?

If the listing still has stock after a sale, it renews automatically and the US$0.20 listing fee is charged again. Selling several units in one order costs US$0.20 for each extra unit. That is why the calculator counts US$0.20 per item sold.

Do UK sellers pay VAT on Etsy fees?

Yes, unless you have added a valid VAT number to your Etsy account. Etsy then adds VAT at 20% to every fee it charges you. VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim it. Sellers in Ireland are charged VAT on fees even with a VAT number.

What price should I charge to make a profit on Etsy?

Use the “What to charge” tab: enter the amount you want to receive, or the profit you want after your costs, and the calculator finds the lowest price that gets you there with every fee included. Price for the Offsite Ads case if a 15% fee would turn the sale into a loss.
