What donors gave, before fees. Tips donors add for GoFundMe don’t count.

The fixed part of the fee is taken once per donation, so many small gifts cost more than a few big ones.

Charity fundraisers pay a lower rate, but the money goes to the nonprofit, not to you.

Does this match your statement?

GoFundMe advertises no platform fee, and that is true: starting and running a fundraiser costs nothing. But every donation still loses a transaction fee before it reaches you, and that fee has two parts, a percentage and a fixed amount per donation. So what you keep depends not only on how much you raise but on how many people gave it. The rate also changes with your country and with whether the money goes to you or straight to a certified charity, while tips and the monthly-donation fee are paid by donors on top. The calculator above keeps all of these apart.

Four things catch organizers out:

  • No platform fee doesn’t mean no fees. 2.9% + $0.30 comes off every donation. On $5,000 raised from 50 donations that is $160.
  • The $0.30 is charged per donation. On a $5 donation, the smallest GoFundMe accepts, it takes 6% on its own.
  • Tips are not your cost. Donors add them for GoFundMe on top of their gift. They never come out of what you raise, and you can’t see who tipped.
  • Monthly donors pay 5% extra. That is also charged on top, so it doesn’t reduce your payout, but donors notice it on their statement.

A $5 donation loses 9.0% to fees, a $100 donation 3.2% and a $1,000 donation 2.9%: the fixed $0.30 matters less the bigger the gift.

How the fees add up on one fundraiser

$5,000 raised in the US from 50 donations, an average of $100 each:

Worked example
  • Donors pays$5,000.00
  • Platform fee0%$0.00
  • Transaction fee (2.9%)2.9% × $5,000.00−$145.00
  • Transaction fee ($0.30 per donation)$0.30 × 50 donations−$15.00
  • You keep$4,840.00

The percentage part is 2.9% of $5,000, which is $145. The fixed part is $0.30 for each of the 50 donations, $15. Together that is $160, or 3.2% of what you raised, and $4,840 reaches your bank. If the same $5,000 had come from 200 donations of $25, the fixed part would be $60 and you would keep $4,795. GoFundMe takes the fee from each donation as it arrives, so you never get a bill; the “Breakdown” on your Transfers page lists what was deducted.

Charity fundraisers and GoFundMe Pro

In the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland and Australia you can run a certified charity fundraiser instead of a personal one. The rate is lower: 2.2% + $0.30 in the US, against 2.9% + $0.30 for a personal fundraiser, so $500 from five donations costs $12.50 instead of $16.00. The catch is where the money goes. You never receive it: GoFundMe sends it to the nonprofit through PayPal Giving Fund at the end of each month (donations after the 15th are paid the following month), or directly if a US nonprofit has enabled GoFundMe Pay. Charity fundraisers don’t accept American Express, and a personal fundraiser can’t be switched to a charity one once money has come in. Pick “Where does the money go?” above to compare the two.

Nonprofits that run their own campaigns on GoFundMe Pro, the platform formerly called Classy, pay differently. Pricing is custom: an annual subscription plus a transaction fee per donation set in the contract. On top of that, GoFundMe Pay charges up to 2.5% + $0.30 per card donation, 1% more for American Express, 1% + $0.30 for ACH bank payments and 2.5% + $0.30 for PayPal and Venmo. Donations a Pro nonprofit receives through its Nonprofit Page on GoFundMe cost 2.2% + $0.30. Choose “A nonprofit on GoFundMe Pro” to enter your own contract rates and see the effect of donors covering the fees.

Tips, monthly donations and other charges donors see

Donors sometimes find a bigger charge on their statement than the donation they made. There are three usual reasons, and none of them reduces what the organizer receives:

  • The tip. One-time donors can add a tip for GoFundMe with a slider or a custom amount. It can be set to 0, and a tip left by mistake can be refunded.
  • The monthly fee. Monthly donors pay 5% on top of each donation: a $100 monthly gift costs them $105. Fundraisers in Italy and Canada don’t offer monthly giving.
  • Currency conversion. Donors abroad can give in their own currency. GoFundMe charges no conversion fee, but the donor’s bank may, which is why GoFundMe suggests donors pay in their own currency.

Withdrawing is free as well. Once your transfers are set up, new donations take up to five business days to verify and then reach your bank 2–5 business days after each transfer, daily, weekly or monthly as you choose.

GoFundMe fees outside the United States

GoFundMe pays out in 20 countries, each in its own currency. The percentage is 2.9% everywhere except Australia, where it is 2.2%. The fixed part changes with the currency: £0.25 in the UK, €0.25 in the euro countries (Luxembourg too), C$0.30 in Canada, A$0.30 in Australia, CHF 0.30 in Switzerland, 3 kr in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and MXN 5 in Mexico. Here is 5,000 raised from 50 donations in each country’s own currency:

UK, European and Swiss rates already include VAT, and Australian rates include GST, so there is nothing to add on top. The Nordic and Mexican rows look more expensive only because 5,000 kronor or pesos is a much smaller sum, so the fixed fee weighs more on each donation.

Ways to keep more of each donation

  • Set your goal to cover the fees. To keep $10,000 from about 100 donations you need to raise $10,329.56. “What to charge” works this out for any amount.
  • Use a certified charity fundraiser when the money is for a nonprofit in one of the five countries that offer them. The rate is lower, and the money goes straight to the charity.
  • Plan for many small gifts. If your fundraiser relies on lots of $5 and $10 donations, expect fees of about 6% to 9% rather than 3%.
  • On GoFundMe Pro, let donors cover the fees. When they tick the box, their gift is grossed up so the nonprofit receives the full donation.

Questions people ask

How much does GoFundMe take from each donation?

In the US, 2.9% of the donation plus $0.30, deducted automatically before the money reaches you. A $50 donation leaves you $48.25. On $5,000 raised from 50 donations the fees come to $160, so you keep $4,840. There is no separate platform fee.

Is GoFundMe really free?

Starting and running a fundraiser is free: GoFundMe charges no platform fee. The only deduction is the transaction fee on each donation, 2.9% + $0.30 in the US. Donors may also add a tip for GoFundMe, but that is optional and paid on top of their donation, so it never comes out of what you raise.

If I raise $10,000 on GoFundMe, how much will I get?

It depends on how many donations make up the $10,000, because $0.30 is taken from each one. From 100 donations the fees are $320 and you receive $9,680. From 200 smaller donations the fees are $350 and you receive $9,650. From 20 large ones you would keep $9,704.

How much should I set my GoFundMe goal to cover the fees?

GoFundMe itself suggests setting your goal slightly above what you need. To keep $10,000 from about 100 donations in the US you need to raise $10,329.56. Switch the calculator to “What to charge”, enter what you need and your expected number of donations, and it finds the exact total.

What are GoFundMe’s fees in the UK, Canada, Australia and Europe?

Per donation, GoFundMe takes 2.9% + £0.25 in the UK, 2.9% + C$0.30 in Canada, 2.2% + A$0.30 in Australia and 2.9% + €0.25 in Ireland and the other euro countries. Switzerland is 2.9% + CHF 0.30, Sweden, Norway and Denmark 2.9% + 3 kr, and Mexico 2.9% + MXN 5. UK, European and Swiss rates already include VAT and Australian rates include GST, so nothing is added on top.

Are GoFundMe fees lower for charity fundraisers?

Yes. Certified charity fundraisers pay 2.2% + $0.30 in the US and 2.2% + C$0.30 in Canada, 1.9% + £0.20 in the UK, 1.9% + €0.35 in Ireland and 1.9% + A$0.30 in Australia. On $500 from five US donations that is $12.50 instead of $16.00. The money goes to the nonprofit, not to the organizer, and charity fundraisers exist only in those five countries.

Does my GoFundMe tip go to the person I’m donating to?

No. The tip goes to GoFundMe, is added on top of your donation and is entirely optional: you can set it to 0 before you pay. The organizer can’t see whether you tipped. If you left a tip by mistake, GoFundMe will refund it if you fill in its refund request form.

What is the 5% fee on GoFundMe monthly donations?

Donors who choose a monthly donation pay 5% of each monthly donation on top, so a $100 monthly gift costs the donor $105. It doesn’t reduce what the organizer receives: the usual transaction fee still comes off the $100, leaving $96.80. Fundraisers in Italy and Canada don’t offer monthly donations.

Does GoFundMe charge to withdraw money or convert currency?

No. The transaction fee is the only deduction; there is no fee to transfer funds to your bank, which takes 2–5 business days once a transfer starts. Donors abroad can give in their own currency; GoFundMe charges no conversion fee, although their bank may.

What are GoFundMe Pro’s fees?

GoFundMe Pro is priced by contract: an annual subscription plus a transaction fee per donation. Its GoFundMe Pay processing costs up to 2.5% + $0.30 per card donation, 1% more for American Express, 1% + $0.30 for ACH and 2.5% + $0.30 for PayPal or Venmo. Donations a Pro nonprofit receives through its Nonprofit Page on GoFundMe cost 2.2% + $0.30.
